The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Eco-Discovery Center is a world-class visitor center, with over 6400 square feet of exhibits and displays, including a 74-seat movie theater showing a wonderful high-definition film about the fragile Florida Keys ecosystems.
The Eco-Discovery Center has a mission to increase awareness for the need to preserve and protect the beautiful ecosystems of the Florida Keys so that future generations can also enjoy this beautiful place. Highlights include an interactive map of the Keys, a replica of the Aquarius underwater laboratory and an underwater video camera that allows guests to observe coral spawning, assess damage from a boat grounding, monitor the health of a coral reef and more.
The Center also features a stunning 20-minute high-definition film, computer interactive exhibits, murals, graphic displays with text and images, a live weather station and replicas of South Florida habitats such as mangroves, complete with sounds.
One of our most popular exhibits is the Mote Marine Laboratory Living Reef, with a 2,500-gallon reef tank and displays showing some of the ongoing coral restoration efforts. And in 2009, we installed over 200 solar panels to our roof, providing up to 30% of the electricity for the facility. A touch screen display gives a real-time read-out of the panels. Our newest exhibit is a 9-minute 3D underwater video filmed at Fort Jefferson and the Dry Tortugas National Park.
The Center is located on the Truman Waterfront and has something for people of all ages. We are open Tuesday through Saturday, from 9:00am to 4:00pm. The Eco-Discovery Center is informative, fun, free and there is free on-site parking.
