Florida Scrub-jay Trail

Add to plan Remove from plan

The Florida Scrub-Jay Trailhead serves as the state-wide effort to identify existing Scrub-Jay habitat on private and public lands. This provides an excellent birding destination with a variety of habitats and several species of birds, including Florida's only endemic species, the Florida Scrub-Jay.
The Trailhouse, situated in an old Florida Cracker style home, overlooks Flag Lake and is surrounded  by citrus trees and memories of the bygone era.    Fall and Winter brings the arrival of  thousands of migratory birds into the marshes and upland habitat, while the Spring  through Summer brings native Florida wildflowers buzzing  with pollinators.
Other wildlife seen on the Trail include alligators, otters, fox, bobcat and the not so wild miniature sicilian donkeys.
At the heart of the Trailhouse is B.B..Brown's Gardens, a nursery specializing in native Florida plants that attract wildlife and organic vegetables and herbs raised the old fashioned way.
Educational programs with guest speakers are held in the Trailhouse or the lakeside amphitheater. Guided tours are offered  throughout the year.
