Well known as an oasis of natural Florida habitats for wildlife, especially birds. Natural salt marshes, hardwood swamps, extensive pine forests and freshwater pools provide a haven for wildlife and people. Fishing, hiking, bird watching, wildlife observation and viewing the historic St. Marks lighthouse draw visitors from around the world. The refuge visitor center has exhibits, a gift shop and restrooms and is a great place to start your visit. Of special interest is the fall migration of the monarch butterflies and the winter migration of the whooping cranes.
